July 14, 2020
My update today is to address some of the concerns and timelines for the Reading 2020-2021 Reopening Plan to be released. We are doing everything in our power to find workable solutions that bring students and staff back together safely for the 2020-2021 school year.
On Monday night, we met with both a parent advisory committee and a staff advisory team to discuss our reopening plans. We have solicited feedback on reopening from our administrative team, the Reading Education Association, as well as, staff and district families through online surveys. Our team has also been collaborating with area school districts in this planning process.
While initially planning to bring a reopening plan to the Board of Education this Wednesday, July 15, we are postponing this timeline. At the board meeting on Wednesday, I plan to summarize the outcomes of the parent and staff advisory meetings, the surveys, and the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, the Ohio Department of Health, American Academy of Pediatrics, and Ohio Education Association. I will also be presenting a number of reopening models for the board to discuss. I will email a summary of my superintendent’s report to parents on Thursday.
The Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, July 15, begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be live-streamed via YouTube. The link to the meeting will not go live until 5:30 p.m. If the meeting does not appear automatically at 5:30, please refresh the page. Click here to view the meeting.
Following this week’s board meeting, the Reading Reopening Plan will be finalized and presented at a special board meeting on July 22. A special board meeting is scheduled for July 29 for final board action on the reopening plan. We will communicate these final plans with our parents following the meeting.
Our goal is to create a plan that prioritizes the value of education and the health, safety, and well-being of every staff member and student who walks into our building. I appreciate your patience as we continue to work through this process.
